WHAT MAKES WIMBLEDON GREAT!

THE TRADITION STARTED LONG AGO JULY 23, 1868, ORIGINALLY AS "THE ALL ENGLAND CROQUET CLUB". ITS FIRST GROUND WAS OFF WORPLE ROAD, WIMBLEDON.  IN 1876, LAWN TENNIS DEVISED BY MAJOR WALTER CLOPTON WINGFIELD A YEAR LATER THE INAUGURAL 1877 WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIP OPENED ON JULY 9 1877. THE FIRST EVENT HELD WAS GENTLEMAN'S SINGLES WON BY SPENCER GORE, AN OLD HARROVIAN RACKETS PLAYER, FROM A FIELD OF 22.  ABOUT 200 SPECTATORS PAID ONE SHILLING TO WATCH THE FINAL.  WITH BEAUTY, SILENCE AS ANDY MURRAY SAYS.  THE GRASS IS IMPECCABLE. THE GROUNDS ARE ORDERLY AND WELL ORGANIZED.  THE STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM CHILLED TO THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE BRINGS DELIGHT TO SO MANY.  YES THIS PLACE IS HISTORIC! ANDY MURRAY BROKE THE LOSING TRADITION OF BRITISH PLAYERS IN 2013 WINNING THE CROWN AFTER 77 YEARS SINCE FRED PERRY WON 3 IN A ROW IN 1936, NO BRITISH MEN HAD WON THE MOST COVETED TENNIS EVENT IN THE WORLD BEFORE THIS.  VIRGINIA WADE WAS THE LAST WOMEN TO WIN IN 1977.  SO MANY CHAMPIONS HAVE BOWED TO THE QUEEN OVER THE YEARS LIKE SUZANNE LENGLEN WHO WON THIS TITLE 6 TIMES WAS LIKE A LION ON THE COURT, AGGRESSIVE AND ONLY SOLICITED THE BEST TO TEACH AND TRAIN HER.  THEN THE SKILLS OF BILL TILDEN WON HIM 3 SINGLE TITLES & A DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP AS WELL.  DON BUDGE THE FIRST TO WIN A D SLAM AND WON WIMBLEDON 2 TIMES IN 1937 AND 1938 THE FIRST TO WIN THE "TRIPLE CROWN" SINGLES, DOUBLES, MIXED DOUBLES WITH GENE MAKO AND ALICE MARBLE. THEN WE MOVE ONTO MARGARET COURT THE QUEEN OF TENNIS WON THIS TOURNAMENT 3 TIMES BUT A TOTAL OF 24 GRAND SLAMS IN WHICH SERENA IS PERSUING. WHO CAN FORGET THE OTHER AUSSIE ROD LAVER WHO WON THE GRAND SLAM NOT ONCE BUT TWICE IN 1962 & 1969 THE 5'8 LEFTY KNOWN FOR HIS SERVE THOUGH SMALL IN STATURE PLAYED HUGE. THEN THERE'S BILLY JEAN KING WITH 6 TITLES AND OF COURSE MARTINA NAVRATILOVA WITH THE MOST 11 WIMBLEDON TITLES AND SEFFI GRAF WITH 7 AND SERENA WILLIAMS WITH 6.  WHAT ABOUT JOHN MCENROE HE WON 3 AND JIMMY CONNERS 2 VICTORIES AT THE ALL ENGLAND CLUB. THEN HIS OLD SWEETHART CHRIS EVERT WITH 3 CHAMPIONSHIPS.  BJORN BORG MY MAN HE HAD 6 TROPHYS AND AUTHUR ASHE FIRST BLACK MALE IN 1975 AND ATHEA GIBSON IN 1957 AND 1958 HAD 2 VICTORIES.  BORIS "BOOM BOOM BECKER THE YOUNGEST PLAYER TO WIN WIMBLEDON WON BACK TO BACK AT THE AGE OF 17 AND DON'T FORGET PISTOL PETE SAMPRAS WHO RECORDED 7 TROPHYS IN ENGLAND EVEN DENYING COUNTRYMAN ANDRE AGASSI MANY WHERE HE WON 1 IN 1999.  ROGER FEDERER AND WILLIAM RENSHAW TIES PETE FOR THE MOST MEN'S WIMBLEDON TITLES WITH 7.  AND NOVAK DJOKOVIC  HAS  WITH JOHN NEWCOMBE AND PULLING UP THE REAR WITH 2 TITLES ARE ROY EMERSON, LEW HOAD, STEFAN EDBERG, AND RAFAEL NADAL.  WHAT MAKES THIS TOURNAMENT GREAT?  THE PLAYERS BRING THIS ATMOSPHERE ALIVE OVER THE LAST 1OO YEARS WHERE PLAYERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD HAVE WALKED AND PLAYED ON THE LAWN OF THE QUEEN WHERE THE PRIZE MONEY TODAY IS OVER 2 MILLION DOLLARS.  SO DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? BETTER EAT YOUR WHEATIES!
